Julia Mitzen collected three hits in three at bats, as Wakefield Varsity Warriors defeated George C. Marshall 12-0 on Friday. Mitzen doubled in the first inning, doubled in the second inning, and doubled in the fifth inning.
Wakefield Varsity Warriors opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two doubles. Wakefield Varsity Warriors first got on the board when Mitzen doubled, scoring one run.
A double by Regan Hughes, a double by Mitzen, and a single by Lucy Strawn helped Wakefield Varsity Warriors extend their early lead in the second.
Three more Wakefield Varsity Warriors runs crossed the plate in the third inning to extend the lead to 9-0. Hannah Nilame hit a solo home run to right field, Mitzen was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Strawn singled, scoring one run.
Hughes earned the win for Wakefield Varsity Warriors. The hurler gave up one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out one and walking one. Helen Kluesener took the loss for George C. Marshall. The starting pitcher went three innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, striking out five and walking two.
Wakefield Varsity Warriors piled up 16 hits in the game. Strawn and Mitzen were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in three runs for Wakefield Varsity Warriors. Laura-Kate Gwilliam, Kira Zoeller, Hughes, and Reece Wilder each collected multiple hits for Wakefield Varsity Warriors. Wakefield Varsity Warriors were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Gwilliam made the most plays with five.
Kluesener went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead George C. Marshall in hits. George C. Marshall turned one double play in the game.
Wakefield Varsity Warriors will travel to Alexandria City for their next game on Monday.
